Our first topic is animals. Our first animal is the elephant. Most elephants live in herds. Herds are groups of elephants. There are babies and parents. They are lead by an old female elephant called the matriarch.
An elephant can carry up to 600 pounds with its trunk. Their trunk is like a straw. It does not suck water into its stomach or mouth. It works the same as our nose. If the water gets too high it will hurt the trunk. They breath and smell with their trunk. They use their trunk as a straw to suck up the water and then they squirt it in their mouth, or squirt it on their backs or on others backs.
An adult elephant's skin is 3 cm thick. Elephants are friendly giants! Once you see them with giraffes you will see how kind they are. They mind their own business. It doesn't matter what they look like, it matters if they are strong and trustworthy and kind.
